Managing Your Personal Business AffairsBy Caroline GoldmanFor the millions of boomers and seniors who are either too busy or too overwhelmed to manage their personal business affairs, a new industry aimed at organizing financial, trust, legal, insurance, tax, medical and home affairs is here to help. Personal Business Facilitators, as they are called, work with people going through life transitions, such as illness or death, or anybody who finds the details of working out these necessary but sometimes overwhelming affairs just too much to handle alone. “Many times, people do not have the knowledge or the time –- or are not in the right emotional state of mind –- to handle these matters correctly and efficiently,” says Camille Jayne, founder and CEO of Matters at Hand, one of the first Personal Business Facilitation companies on the scene. “Too often, people procrastinate or totally shut down. Sometimes they turn to their CPA or attorney, who may not have the resources to resolve these matters.” Jayne, a former corporate executive in banking and technology, started Matters at Hand when family and friends began approaching her to help them sort out their personal affairs. “What started as helping one person close out some joint bank accounts and getting them to a qualified trust attorney, grew into assisting nearly 100 people with over 80 tasks –- and it’s still growing!” she says. As personal business affairs grow more complex and varied, personal business facilitators help not only the clients by connecting them with specialist advisors such as lawyers and financial planners, but they also help the advisors by gathering all the client’s pertinent information in organized and complete presentations. “The need was huge and overlooked,” says Jayne. “It was easier and faster for [advisors] to work with me because I knew what to look for, how to review it and what to get to them. Besides, I was not in an overwhelmed state of mind, which helped everyone tremendously.” Matters at Hand now works with people of all ages and with all types of personal business portfolios. “Our goal is to help as many people as possible, either in pre-planning or after a life trauma,” explains Jayne. “We don’t want cost to be the barrier to people getting the help they deserve so they can have the peace of mind that all their affairs are in shape for their lives going forward.” |
